Every year, a flurry of games are released or published into the gaming space. All of these games have had months of hard work, effort, love and artistic quality into them.
Of the multitude of game titles released in a year, some will land horribly — riddled by bugs or bad codes, some will be good — do well enough to stay true to their brand but not more than that and then a few will do so well that they deserve the title of “Game Of The Year”
The “Game Of The Year” or Game Awards is an annual awards ceremony honouring achievements in the video game industry.
The award show was established in 2014, and is produced and hosted by game journalist Geoff Keighley, who worked on its predecessor, the Spike Video Game Awards, for over ten years.
But that’s not all that happens at the awards. In addition, The Game Awards features premieres of upcoming games and new information on previously-announced titles.
For this year’s “Game Of The Year”, the award went to From Software’s Elden Ring. This game was up against other well performing and well made game titles but it stood tall amongst all competitors thanks to its high sales and its position on the play hours charts.
Take note that the “Game Of The Year” is for the best overall game of the year but there are other categories where game titles can go home with awards as well. The following are the other games that went home with plaques and their respective categories;
Mobile Game of The Year
This awards category was created to recognize the huge strides the mobile gaming genre has taken and to reward the brands really putting in work.
This year’s award for the best mobile game for the year 2022 went to Marvel’s Snap.
The mobile game category is pretty inclusive but also broad in itself, there are two clear categories for mobile gaming — Android and iOS (iPhone). As a result of this, there is another category to recognize the best iPhone game of the year.
iPhone Game Of The Year
This award category was created solely to acknowledge the niche of the iOS gaming industry and the brands blazing the trails as well.
For the year 2022, the iPhone game of the year went to EA Sport’s Apex Legends.
The Games Awards show took place on the 8th of December, 2022 at the Microsoft Theater, Los Angeles, USA was hosted by Geoff Keighley.
